The stay
Sai Grand Resorts sits just off the Periyakulam–Kumbakarai road, where the plains give way to the Palani hills. The rooms are new and fully air-conditioned, and most of them are built around the view — either straight out at the ridge or down over the pool.
It is built for the way people actually travel here: families driving up from Madurai for a weekend, groups of friends who want a pool and a projector for the evening, and couples using it as a quieter base than Kodaikanal. There is parking inside the compound, hot water round the clock, and staff on site through the night.

The reason people come
Kumbakarai Falls sits on the Pambar river as it drops off the Kodaikanal hills near Periyakulam, in Theni district. The water collects in a series of natural rock pools, which is what makes it one of the few falls in the region where families can actually get in and bathe.
The upper falls need a short climb over rock; the lower pool is shallow and easy to reach, with steps, changing rooms and shops selling tea and snacks. Local guards close the falls when the water runs high, so it is worth checking on the morning you plan to go — ask at our reception and we will tell you the day’s condition.
The season runs strongest from June through December, when the north-east monsoon fills the river. Go early: by ten in the morning on a Sunday the pools are busy, and by evening the light is gone off the rock.

The resort is about 1.5 km from Kumbakarai Falls — roughly a five-minute drive, or a walk of about twenty minutes along the road.
The falls are generally open from morning until early evening, and entry is free. Access is closed by local authorities during heavy rain or high water. Check with our reception before you set out.

Drive to Periyakulam via Usilampatti on NH 183 — about 75 km, roughly an hour and three quarters — then follow the Kumbakarai road for another 6 km. The nearest railway station is Kodaikanal Road; the nearest airport is Madurai.
